The shape of the water filled cavity hidden beneath ice shelves is extremely important, but hard to measure. Gravity data collected from aircraft can be used to predict the shape. However, in the Dotson Crosson ice shelves in West Antarctica, new direct observations from autonomous platforms sent beneath the ice, and seismic observations from the ice surface showed gravity models were systematically too shallow. We explain why and provide a solution applicable her and in other ice shelves.

By analyzing the faint, late-arriving seismic waves from large earthquakes, we can create accurate maps of Earth's deep core. This study provides a new mathematical foundation to confirm the reliability of this method, showing that precise measurements are possible even when earthquake sources are not perfectly distributed. Our findings help improve imaging of Earth's interior, making it more trustworthy.

When in extension, the Earth's crust accommodates deformation by breaking. Through time, faults grow into an intricate network that can be detected by changes in topography, or through modelling (numerical or analogue). This study demonstrates how the Python library Fatbox, the fault analysis toolbox, can extract the network pattern automatically from said datasets and characterise the geometry and kinematics of the fault network.

We introduce SEITCOM-1D, a new open-source software that connects the physical and chemical structure of the Earth’s crust and mantle with seismic observations. This relationship is often difficult to model, but SEITCOM-1D simplifies the process using geophysical and thermodynamic principles. It allows scientists to explore how variations in temperature and composition influence surface wave dispersion and receiver functions, helping to interpret what seismic data reveals about Earth's interior.

A method for shape quantification based on geometrical parameters is proposed alongside a set of regular geometries established as geomodeling benchmarks. Dimensions, gradient and curvature data is obtained on cross-sections. Data analyses provide insight into the main geometrical characteristics of the benchmark models and visualizes geometrical dis-/similarities between bodies. The method and benchmarks are usable in geomodeling workflows and structural comparisons based on sparse data.

In Germany, claystones are studied for their suitability as host-rocks for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. The MATURITY project systematically investigates how gradual burial affects key barrier properties in the Lower Jurassic Amaltheenton Formation of the Lower Saxony Basin (Germany). Understanding these changes helps assess claystone suitability for long-term waste isolation, improving site selection for deep geological repositories.
