Celebrating 15 years of Solid Earth interactive open-access publishing – an editor's choice
Solid Earth is a not-for-profit open-access journal that publishes multidisciplinary research on the composition, structure, and dynamics of the Earth from the surface to the deep interior at all spatial and temporal scales. The journal hosts contributions encompassing observational, experimental, and theoretical investigations in the form of short communications, research articles, method articles, review articles, and discussion and commentaries on all aspects of the solid Earth.

Our journal celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2025, an occasion we are further celebrating with an anniversary collection that highlights the journal’s scope through a selection of some papers published in Solid Earth.  These are papers that stood out by, for example, stimulating new research directions, reviewing state-of-the-art knowledge, developing new methods, or highlighting applications. Thus, the collection aims reflect the breadth, innovation, and ingenuity of work submitted by our authors to Solid Earth.

During the last 15 years, the journal also developed opportunities for the community to participate in driving the journal in manners that are suited for all career stages. For instance, tandem reviews allow early-career scientists to learn to review a manuscript together with a senior supervisor. Also, different levels of editorship allow advancing scientists to engage with experienced scientists.

In this open spirit, we wish you an inspiring browse of our editor’s choice of articles, and we look forward to engaging with you using the potential of Solid Earth.
